"Information's pretty thin stuff unless mixed with experience."Clarence Day
Meet the team that makes our work possible
There’s no shortage of consultants that claim to understand information security and privacy. But few have the knowledge and experience that our team can bring to your project.
All of our consultants are information security professionals with extensive real world experience across both the public and private sector.
What’s more, they’re also real people with real life interests outside of the office. Just like you. Given how much time we spend at our computers, that might just be a surprise to some people!
Director | Consulting Partner
Since I first encountered a hacker in an IT system I was responsible for over 3 decades ago, I have been working with clients to help them understand and manage the risks to which the information systems supporting their businesses are exposed.
As a keen cyclist for many years, I still enjoy the rush of a fast downhill either on or off-road. I also enjoy time with my children and grandchildren, walking, sailing, dabbling with electronics and making my own bread, cheese, beer and wine.

I believe that security done well can help our clients balance the trade-off between new and exciting opportunities and the risk for their businesses. Professionally, I thrive on solving big hairy problems.
Outside of work, I’m kept busy with my family (my lovely wife, three kids and two dogs), woodworking, coaching my kids football team and a perpetual cycle of home DIY.

Consulting Practice Lead
Working for diverse organisations throughout my career and my emotional engagement with work, transformed information security to become a passion for me, rather than a job. I am a big fan of pragmatic, simple and automation approaches, and enjoy supporting our clients on their security journey.
Talk to me about motorcycles, squash or football, and you will find passion that compares to, but cannot compete against information security.
My role at Axenic combines my love of people, process and business management, and allows me to work in a team filled with passionate, knowledgeable and motivated people.
Outside of work I love spending time with my wonderful family and friends. I am a regular gym goer, to offset my interest in cooking and wine. I’m a keen traveller and explorer and always like to have a new adventure on the radar.
Since kicking off my marketing career with the Sydney Olympics back in 2000 I have been working with companies helping to deliver marketing strategies that are customer focused. I am particularly interested in Digital Marketing and I lecture for the NZ Marketing Association for their Certificate in Digital Marketing course.
When I’m not banging on about marketing - my family and young kids keeps me busy. I enjoy coaching their sports including rugby and have even been known to play the odd game myself now and again. I love to get out on the South Coast for a dive or a surf when time/weather permits.
I am passionate about delivering great outcomes to our diverse client portfolio. My role is to facilitate and project manage the engagements delivered by our team.
If I’m not out and about chasing sunsets with my partner trying to get the perfect photo, I’m sat by the fire listening to music; enjoying a glass of pinot & a carefully crafted cheeseboard. I spend every Sunday evening with my close-knit family and like to fill my weekends up with concerts & shows.
My role as an Engagement Manager at Axenic pulls together all of the skills and experience I’ve been building over many years as a service /delivery professional, in particular my problem solving, relationship management and “making it happen” skills. I work across a range of information security projects making sure business outcomes are delivered to both time and quality requirements. My proactive and energetic approach has been welcomed by the Axenic team and put to good use!
Outside of work I love to create new memories with travel to new places and experience new cultures with my partner. I enjoy art and craft and spending time with family and friends.
I’m passionate about helping my clients to thrive and succeed. My role is to both facilitate successful outcomes for the projects our consultants deliver, and to provide support to the team to ensure things go to plan. I have had the privilege of working in many different roles, allowing me to make a difference to individual lives, and the world a better place. As a confident Engagement Manager, I am particularly strong in stakeholder and relationship establishment.
Out of work I love spending my time with my family and friends. You might find me singing Egyptian songs in a public event or cooking delicious Egyptian plates like (Koshari, Falafel and sweet Basbousa). One of my best hobbies is to travel around the world and learn about different cultures and languages.
I like to take the time to understand context of the client so that the security services I deliver will meet their outcomes, as I don’t believe that security should be reduced to a tick-in-the-box exercise.
I enjoy playing football, watching sports with my cat (go the Hurricanes!), spending hours war gaming with my friends, and tinkering with computers and cars.
I’m passionate about helping our customers, big and small, continuously improve their information security maturity by providing useful and realistic guidance to give them confidence making business decisions. Whether this is as a virtual CISO or auditing an organisation against an international standard, the advice I offer is tailored and relevant to the people that need to hear and understand it.
Away from work you’ll usually find me painting (things not art), making or planning something and hanging out with my family. Closely followed by relaxing with a good book or binge watching the latest crime/thriller/drama.
Johan van Blerk
Senior Consultant (PCI)
During my 20 + years spent working in the security industry I’ve been fortunate to witness significant innovation and growth. I am a lifetime student of all things security and know that I will need to continuously learn and grow in order to keep pace with that innovation. The various roles I have performed, both past and current, have all helped me understand how to best support stakeholders, whether they are shareholders, customers, team members or industry players.
Life is good when you get to do the things that you are passionate about 24/7. I am so very fortunate to be a husband, father, farmer, student and a DIY mechanic.
With information becoming such an important part of everyone’s lives, we need to go to great lengths to protect it. I take pride in knowing I am able to protect the information of our clients through my work. Working in security has been a passion for much of the past decade, with building knowledge and educating others a priority for the future.
Outside work I love spending time with my wife and two daughters, playing badminton or running calories off (acquired through my other passion, eating!). A Mechanical Engineer by education, I also enjoy tinkering with everything from my kids’ toys and stuff around the house, to the classic Volkswagen Beetle I have back in my hometown.
I believe the right balance of security principles underpinned by an understanding of risk and operability is the best way to help clients meet their desired outcomes. For me, the key is to understand our clients and to help them understand, develop and implement integral information security throughout their organisation.
After hours, I can be found living life with my family, whether we are watching media, making media, playing games, travelling, hiking or even roleplaying together.
Great information security is a combination of many factors – understanding risk, knowing your organisational goals and using the right business and technical tools. This will ensure practical and real-world security is embedded throughout your organisation. As a Senior Consultant with Axenic, my job is to help you achieve this.
After hours you can always find me with my wife and kids, either enjoying food, snuggling up to a movie or a good book or tinkering with a new piece of computer code or graphics. When blessed with good weather I enjoy the outdoors whether it is just a barbecue or exploring any piece of nature NZ can provide, letting the adventure choose me.
These days security is critical to business success and I’m passionate about using security to help our customers achieve their goals. I have extensive experience of enterprise IT, in solution design and delivery as well as in IT strategy and planning and I can bring that experience to bear on fitting security into an organisation’s plans, architectures and projects.
I’m a voracious reader – usually having 6 or 7 books on the go at any one time. To balance that out I like to go for long walks or bike rides in the NZ countryside with my family. I also like overseas travel – particularly in the Pacific where I love snorkelling (NZ is far too cold!).
Ever since joining the information security industry as a graduate, my interest and passion has continued to grow. Consulting has given me a diverse knowledge base across all aspects of information security, ranging from risk and assurance to enterprise security architecture. I love working on and leading projects that challenge me, and applying my business and technical knowledge to help solve problems in the ever-changing information security landscape, My enthusiasm for learning sees me on a continuous learning path both through study and work application.
When I'm not at work, I can usually be found up a mountainside taking photographs, out riding my skateboard, or at home knitting a pair of socks.
My natural curiosity and enthusiasm towards exploring new things led me towards Information Security several years ago. My inquisitive nature also helps me to discover and convey information to my customers in a non-technical language. I enjoy helping organisations meet their vision of applying security as part of their roles, with a real purpose and benefit behind it, and not just be seen part of a checklist process.
Otherwise, you will find me visiting a restaurant or a café with my amazing family and friends. I also love to cook, travel, go on long drives (especially during NZ summers). You might also catch me reading fiction or binge watching non-fiction/travel & living/food shows.
My interest in information security comes from observing organisations’ accelerating digital adoptions. With so many malicious actions out there, I am concerned about helping New Zealanders do their due diligence in protecting their new digital assets.
When I’m not at work, I like to crank out a tune either on my stereo or instruments, play games with my friends or friendly strangers, get on my bike, read, cook, garden, or just binge TV.
